The collection consists of a photocopy of a typewritten transcript of Fordyce's Civil War diary, 1862-1864. Fordyce writes about conditions in the field, letters received from home, the weather, money, and his suffering with an illness that was probably malaria.

Fordyce was born in Warren County, Ohio. He was living in Deerfield, Randolph County, Ind., when he served with the 84th regiment of the Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.
